The beard has no relation to mourning the dead, for a man does not mourn, nor to temporal timing, for timing is specific to the characteristics of the fitra (innate disposition), such as trimming the mustache and clipping the nails. Shaving the beard is forbidden, and the preponderant opinion is that it is obligatory to let it grow fully, with permission granted for trimming what exceeds a fistful. It is wrong to leave the beard disheveled; for the Sunnah (definition) is to honor it.
