Which is better: to pray Witr with one rak'ah or with three?

Scholars differed on the number of rak'ahs for Witr prayer and on how to perform it if it consists of three rak'ahs.

Regarding the number, the Hanafis hold that Witr is three rak'ahs with a single taslim, while the Shafi'is believe one has the choice between one, three, or more rak'ahs. The Shafi'i school cited the hadith, "Whoever wishes, let him pray Witr with one rak'ah, and whoever wishes, let him pray Witr with three or with five." The Hanafi school, on the other hand, based its view on the practice of the Companions and the statement of Al-Hasan, "The Muslims are in agreement that Witr is three rak'ahs, and there is no taslim except at their end."

As for the manner of performing it if it is three rak'ahs, there are three forms: 1. Separation: One prays two rak'ahs and makes taslim, then prays a separate third rak'ah. This is the prescribed method for Malikis and the preferred method for Shafi'is and Hanbalis. 2. Continuous without sitting: One prays the three rak'ahs continuously without sitting or making taslim except at the very end. This is the preferred method for Shafi'is and Hanbalis. 3. Continuous with sitting after the second: One prays two rak'ahs and sits for the tashahhud without making taslim, then stands for the third rak'ah and makes taslim afterward, making it similar to the Maghrib prayer. This is the prescribed method for Hanafis.
