What is the required stance to take when two prominent scholars differ on a matter? Should a Muslim follow what his soul is reassured by in the Qur’an and Sunnah, or should he follow a specific group?

"The layperson, if seeking a fatwa, must ask someone he trusts in their religious commitment and knowledge. It is not permissible for him to follow dispensations or to act upon what his heart dictates if it contradicts the clear religious evidence. If the opinions of scholars differ, refer to Fatwas no. 33142 and 32577."
