The nine Imams stipulate five conditions for a hadith to be judged authentic: a continuous chain of narration (isnad muttasil), the narrator's uprightness (adalah), the narrator's precision (dabt), absence of oddness (shudhudh), and absence of hidden defects (illah). Al-Bukhari and Muslim were distinguished by their stringent conditions for the highest degrees of authenticity. Al-Bukhari stipulated proof of a meeting between the narrator and the one he narrated from in the anana chain, while Muslim deemed proof of contemporaneousness sufficient.
