Is an expiatory offering (kaffarah) for an oath (yameen) incumbent upon one who said to his mother, "It is forbidden for me to use this furniture," out of anger at her use of the money he sent her for Hajj, and then later used the furniture?

Scholars have differed regarding the necessity of expiation (kaffarah) for someone who forbids something permissible upon themselves with the intention of abstaining from it. The more cautious approach is to offer expiation, due to the Almighty's saying: "O Prophet, why do you forbid what Allah has made lawful for you?" and His saying: "Allah has already ordained for you the dissolution of your oaths." Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen mentioned that whoever forbids something lawful upon themselves with the intention of abstaining, then expiation for an oath is due if they do it, basing his argument on the aforementioned verse, which was revealed when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade honey upon himself.
