Is it obligatory to obey one of the parents in doing something whose legal ruling (permissibility or impermissibility) is not known, or is it obligatory to stop and inquire about its ruling first?

Obedience to parents in what is good and lawful is among the most emphasized duties. Scholars have unanimously agreed on the obligation of obeying them in ambiguous matters. However, regarding what one does not know its ruling, or what one suspects to be forbidden, obedience to them is not permissible, because obedience to them is only obligatory in what is good and lawful. A responsible individual (mukallaf) is not permitted to undertake an action until they know Allah’s ruling concerning it, or they ask the righteous scholars.
