What is the ruling of Islamic law on the custom of revealing a woman's virginity to her parents and others on her wedding night, and does a woman have a legally acceptable excuse if she is not a virgin without having been touched by a man?

This custom is ugly and reprehensible, for it involves exposing the Muslim woman's privacy, harming her, and the possibility of her 'awrah being seen and her being accused of immorality. Therefore, it must be abandoned. It is incumbent upon the husband, if he finds his wife to be different from what he expected, to think well of her and seek excuses for her, as virginity can be lost through means other than intercourse. Holding a woman accountable for the loss of her virginity without careful consideration is an injustice to her, an assault on her honor, and a disclosure of her secret.
