What exactly should I do when I doubt the number of rak'ahs: should I base my decision on the higher number and not perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw), or should I base my decision on the higher number and perform the prostration of forgetfulness after the prayer?

Seeking permission before entering houses is an obligation in Islamic law. A woman must seek permission from her mahrams (unmarriageable kin) before entering their private rooms, for every person has their sanctity and privacy. It is not permissible for one to see the private parts of others, due to the great corruptions this entails, leading to the violation of the sanctity of homes and the exposure of awrah (private parts). Allah Almighty has commanded His servants to seek permission before entering houses, to protect honor and preserve people's privacy. Allah Almighty says: ﴿O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome and greet their people. That is better for you, that you may be reminded.﴾ [An-Nur: 27].

The pure Sunnah of the Prophet has also clarified that seeking permission from mahrams is also obligatory. It was narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "If one of you enters upon his Muslim brother, he should seek permission. If he is permitted, (he may enter); otherwise, he should return." And because khalwah (private seclusion) between a man and a woman is forbidden, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) hadith: "No man should be alone with a woman unless Satan is the third of them." Thus, seeking permission prevents falling into forbidden khalwah, protects honor, and preserves morals. Therefore, a Muslim must adhere to the manners of seeking permission and be keen to apply them in their daily life, to protect honor, preserve people's privacy, and in compliance with the command of Allah and His Messenger.

Accordingly, a woman must seek permission from her brother and father before entering their private rooms. This is part of good manners, respect, and appreciation, and a way of blocking pretexts that could lead to undesirable consequences. Satan flows through the son of Adam like blood, and no one is safe from fitnah (temptation). Therefore, everyone must adhere to the manners and teachings of Islam, to protect themselves, their honor, and their communities. One of the best ways a Muslim can protect themselves from falling into sins is by lowering their gaze from mahrams. Allah Almighty says: ﴿Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.﴾ [An-Nur: 30].
