What is the ruling on one who performs Hajj on behalf of his parents but has not performed Hajj for himself?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Hajj must be performed immediately by whoever is able, and it is not permissible to delay it for the sake of honoring parents or for any other reason, because it is an individual obligation (fardh 'ayn) that takes precedence over honoring parents. This is based on the Almighty's saying: "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Hasten to set out for Makkah, for none of you knows what illness or need may befall him." If a son puts his parents first in Hajj, their Hajj is valid, and he must then hasten to perform Hajj for himself whenever he is able.
