What is the expiation for one who broke an oath that stated: "By God Almighty, I will go on a diet, and if I don't, I will fast for a full continuous year, and O Lord, if I don't do it, then take revenge on me," knowing that he is unable to fast for a full year?

Scholars differ concerning one who swore multiple oaths and then broke them, whether an expiation is required for each oath or if a single expiation suffices. The preponderant opinion is the former. As for an oath of contention and anger (nathr al-lajaj wal-ghadab), its fulfillment is not obligatory, and the one who made the vow has the choice between fulfilling it or atoning for it. Its expiation is like the expiation for an oath. A Muslim is forbidden from invoking curses upon himself, his children, his servants, and his possessions, lest it coincide with a moment of answered supplication.
