The answer

is obligatory on money under two conditions: reaching the (minimum threshold) and the passing of one full Hijri year over it.

The Shari' nisab for money is the equivalent of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver.

If the money reaches the nisab and one year has passed over it, then Zakat becomes obligatory on it at a rate of 2.5% (one-quarter of one-tenth), calculated by dividing the amount by forty.

Saving money for studies does not waive the Zakat obligation if the conditions are met.
