Did Umm Kulthum, daughter of Abu Bakr, refuse to marry Umar ibn Al-Khattab?
Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr al-Siddiq was born after her father's death. Ibn Mandah, Abu Nu'aym, and others erred in listing her among the Companions.
The story of Umar ibn al-Khattab's proposal to Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr al-Siddiq is a weak, unproven story. It was reported with a weak and broken chain of transmission by Al-Tabari, and as a suspended narration by Ibn Abd al-Barr, also with a weak chain. The correct and established fact is that Umar ibn al-Khattab married Umm Kulthum bint Ali ibn Abi Talib, whom Umar honored greatly, giving her a dowry of forty thousand dirhams due to her lineage from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. She bore him Zayd ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab.
