Is it permissible for a husband to perform the Farewell circumambulation (Tawaf al-Wada') on behalf of his wife due to her illness, or is it obligatory for her to offer a sacrifice or something else?

Scholars have differed regarding the Farewell Tawaf (circumambulation), whether it is obligatory or a Sunnah, with the majority holding it to be obligatory. A sick person can perform tawaf while being carried or in a wheelchair. If he is unable to do so, he should offer a compensatory sacrifice (dam). As for someone who omits it due to an excuse, such as severe illness, the Shafi'is hold that no compensatory sacrifice is required of him, likening him to a menstruating woman, and this is the relied-upon opinion. However, it is more cautious to slaughter a sheep in Mecca and distribute it among its poor. A husband's tawaf does not suffice for his wife, as there is no representation (niyabah) in tawaf.
