The answer

The majority of scholars stipulate the guardian (wali) and two witnesses for the validity of a marriage contract. The guardian's knowledge and consent are not sufficient; he must directly conduct the contract or appoint someone else to do so. If a woman contracts her own marriage or the marriage of another, whether with or without her guardian's permission, the contract is invalid. If it is difficult for you to meet with the woman's guardian, you may appoint someone else to accept your marriage in the guardian's country. Similarly, the guardian may appoint someone else to marry off his ward in the place of your residence.
