Did the female companions extend their hands to shake the hand of the Prophet, peace be upon him, at the time of pledging allegiance, whereupon he told them: "I do not shake hands with women," or did they not do so and instead say: "Allah and His Messenger are more merciful to us than we are to ourselves, come, let us pledge allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allah"?

Shaking hands between a man and a non-mahram (definition) woman is forbidden, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, never shook hands with women, neither during the pledge of allegiance nor at any other time. He accepted their pledge of allegiance through words. It is narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: "For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than to touch a woman who is not lawful for him." And touching is arousing, and every cause that leads to falling into the forbidden is prohibited in Islam.
