Punishment in Islam is of two types: hudud and ta'zir. Hudud are the punishments prescribed by the Sharia, such as retribution (qisas), flogging the fornicator, the slanderer, and the wine-drinker, and cutting off the hand of the thief. As for ta'zir, it is left to the discretion of the ruler or judge, who determines what they deem appropriate, deterrent, and corrective for Sharia violations for which there is no prescribed hadd or expiation (kaffara), and it may involve beating, imprisonment, and reprimand.
