Is it permissible or forbidden to use wine bottles for drinking water?

It is permissible to use empty wine bottles for drinking water if they are washed, for the default rule concerning vessels is permissibility, except for what has been explicitly excluded by Islamic law. However, it is preferable to avoid drinking from them and to remove them from the house, in order to avoid suspicions, and because a Muslim is commanded to steer clear of situations that might invite accusation, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did with Safiyyah.
