The answer

Scholars differed regarding the minimum period of purity between two menstrual cycles. The majority of scholars held that it is fifteen days, while the Hanbalis held that it is thirteen days. Their evidence is the of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the story of the woman who menstruated three times in a month. So, if she sees blood after, for example, five days, and it is possible to combine this blood with the previous blood such that the total duration of the blood, including the intervening period of purity and the returning blood, does not exceed fifteen days, then this returning blood is a continuation of the previous menstrual cycle.
