Ja'far is the brother of al-Hasan al-'Askari. The Twelver Shia refer to him as "al-Kadhdhab" (the Liar) because he inherited his brother al-Hasan al-'Askari's estate after his death, as al-Hasan had no offspring. This undermines the Twelver belief in the existence of the hidden Imam, "Sahib al-Zaman." Ibn Hajar indicated that this title has no basis and that the Twelvers' narrations are not reliable. He also noted that the Shia accused him of immorality and drinking alcohol out of greed for the inheritance.
