What does it mean to love a person more than Almighty Allah, and is it considered shirk (polytheism)? What are the practical examples of this, such as speaking with a forbidden girl out of love, or allowing one's wife to uncover her face while traveling out of compassion and love?

Among the characteristics of the believers is that they love Allah more than anything else. This is demonstrated in their complete obedience to Allah and His Messenger. The conflict between Allah's command and what the soul inclines to reveals the extent of this love. Whoever prefers the love of something else over the love of Allah and His Messenger is disobedient. Ibn Rajab clarified that the love of Allah is of two degrees: obligatory and recommendable. The obligatory love is adhering to commands and refraining from prohibitions. As for the recommendable degree, it is drawing closer through supererogatory acts and being content with divine decree. Moreover, attachment to human beings may diminish the love of Allah, and ardent passion ( عشق ) can be a subtle form of polytheism that diminishes Tawhid (monotheism). The more the heart loves Allah, the less it becomes attached to others.
