The Shariah-stipulated threshold (nisab) for Zakat on money is determined by comparing it to the nisab of gold or silver, whichever is more beneficial for the poor. The nisab for gold is 85 grams, and for silver, it is 595 grams. To determine the nisab in any given currency, the value of the gold and silver nisab in that currency is ascertained, and the one that is more advantageous for the poor is chosen. The amount obligatory to be given out is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%).
