Is it permissible for the son's ex-wife to sever the ties of kinship between the child and his father and grandparents, after he had been spending time with them, and what is the effect of that on the child's psyche?

A woman has a greater right to the custody of her child so long as she does not remarry, due to the child's need for her affection and care, and this is what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ruled. The default for a child's custody is with his mother as long as she looks after his welfare and does not neglect him.

Both parents have the right to see and visit their son, and this is determined by custom. Designating his stay at his father's house on Friday during the day is a good arrangement, provided that his stay with his mother does not corrupt him. Divorce is rarely free from psychological impact, but the child's closeness to his mother usually compensates for this.

When the child reaches seven years of age, he is given a choice between his parents and stays with whichever one he chooses. Custody is given to the one who is more compassionate towards the child. If it becomes clear that the mother is neglecting her child, the matter must be brought before the court to reconsider his custody.
