What is the ruling on shunning a father who does not pray, consumes intoxicants and pills, and is the questioner sinful if he does not give him money for fear that he will spend it on things that displease Allah?

The father's failure to pray is an act of disbelief that expels one from the fold of Islam. His consumption of alcohol along with narcotic pills combines various evils. The questioner must strive to guide his father and save him and his family, and not abandon him, but rather continue to call him [to guidance]. He may cease financially supporting him if he knows that the money is being used for unlawful things, but he must not cut off financial support for his family. He must exert lawful means in calling his father [to guidance], such as influencing him through those he trusts, separating his family from him, standing against bad companions, cooperating with the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, and persistently supplicating for his guidance. He should view him with the eye of divine decree, thus having mercy on him, and with the eye of Sacred Law, thus hating his actions.
