Must a woman who has been granted an irrevocable divorce wait until her iddah (waiting period) ends before marrying another man, especially if she suffered a long period of abandonment by her husband and his failure to fulfill her marital rights?
It is impermissible for a woman undergoing her 'iddah (waiting period) to marry before its expiration, by scholarly consensus, due to the Almighty’s saying: {And do not resolve on the knot of marriage until the prescribed term has reached its end}. The marriage of a woman undergoing 'iddah is invalid because the 'iddah is for ascertaining the emptiness of the womb, preventing the mixing of lineages, and she is prohibited from marriage due to the right of the first husband. What is obligatory is patience until the 'iddah expires. Fasting, lowering the gaze, avoiding provocations, strengthening one's connection with Allah, accompanying righteous women, occupying one's time with beneficial activities, and supplication will help in this regard.
