What is the ruling on cursing abstract things and sins?
It is impermissible to curse anything that does not deserve to be cursed, and some scholars have considered it among the major sins. If a curse does not find its rightful object, it returns to the one who uttered it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, when a servant curses something, the curse ascends to the heaven, but the gates of heaven are closed against it. Then it descends to the earth, but its gates are closed against it. Then it turns right and left, and if it finds no passage, it returns to the one who cursed. If the cursed object is deserving of it, then [it settles there]; otherwise, it returns to the one who uttered it."
