Is persistence in committing a minor sin considered a major sin, what is the meaning of persistence, and what is the ruling on someone who repeatedly commits a sin while repeatedly and sincerely repenting and feeling remorse?
Insistence is persistence in doing something, and returning to a sin after repenting from it due to weakness of will is not considered insistence. Insisting on sin is a transgression in itself. Ibn Abbas stated, "There is no major sin with seeking forgiveness, nor a minor sin with insistence." A believing servant should feel Allah's watchfulness over him, and look at the greatness of the One who forbade the sin, not at its size. Among the punishments of sin is that it makes other sins easy for its perpetrator, and he is deprived of success in acts of obedience.
