The answer

If the salary is spent on oneself, one's family, and those whose maintenance is obligatory, without extravagance or waste, then there is no zakat due on it. However, if there is an excess beyond the Shariah-prescribed needs after paying off debts and essential necessities, then zakat is obligatory on it if it reaches the nisab by itself or by combining it with wealth of the same type. All of it is subject to zakat upon the completion of a full year (hawl), and the amount of zakat is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%).
