Is anything required of my sister, or is there an expiation for her past actions of confining insects until their death and keeping them?

There is no harm in collecting insects for contemplation of Allah's creation, but it is not permissible to imprison them until they die of hunger and thirst. Whoever does this intentionally must repent and seek forgiveness.
