The majority of scholars stipulate the presence of two just witnesses for the validity of a marriage contract. It is not required for the two witnesses to be relatives of the spouses; rather, they may be from the groom's family or the bride's family (other than her guardian), or from others, if they are qualified to bear witness. However, it is not valid for the woman's guardian or her agent to be one of the two witnesses in her marriage.
