How is Zakat calculated on stock market shares if their value reached 130,0 and you have debts of 160,0 when the Hawl (Zakat year) is due? Is it permissible to give Zakat to a poor brother to help him complete his university studies?

We have previously explained how to calculate Zakat on shares. As for debts owed to individuals, if these are debts you owe, and you possess other non-zakatable wealth exceeding your needs, then you offset these debts with that wealth. In such a case, you pay Zakat on all shares if their value is equal to or greater than the debt. If the shares are worth less, you deduct the equivalent amount of the debt from the value of the shares, and then pay Zakat on the remainder if it reaches the nisab. If you do not possess surplus non-zakatable wealth, then no Zakat is due from you. If the debts are owed to you by individuals, then you add their value to the shares and pay Zakat on the total, provided the debts are due and owed by a solvent and willing payer. It is permissible to give Zakat to a poor brother, enough to cover his expenses for a full year, based on his poverty and not because he is a university student.
