Is conveying happy or sad news to others considered gheebah (backbiting) or nameemah (slander), and what is the correct approach to improve social relationships and avoid misunderstanding with female friends?

The first advice given regarding friendship is to choose righteous friends, for "a person is upon the religion of his intimate friend." What is required in friendship is loyalty, trustworthiness, honesty, generosity, and praise. It is not obligatory, nor is it even recommended, to inform all friends about what happens to another friend. In fact, it might be impermissible if it constitutes backbiting (gheebah). Allah has disliked "qeel wa qaala" (idle talk, or 'he said, she said'), meaning excessive talk that is of no benefit. To determine whether speech is backbiting or slandering (namimah (definition)), consider the following: If it is mentioning a person with something they dislike, then it is backbiting. If it is an effort to cause corruption, stir up discord, or reveal something that its owner dislikes being revealed, then it is slandering.
