A man's statement to his wife: "If you leave the room, by Allah, you will not enter this house again," is a كناية (allusion) of divorce. Divorce does not occur by it unless there is the intention [to divorce]. If he intended divorce by it, then one revocable divorce occurs, and he can take her back during her 'iddah if it was the first or second divorce. If he did not intend divorce but rather intended to threaten her and prevent her from leaving, then no divorce occurs, and he must offer an expiation for breaking an oath.
