How do I rectify my mistake when I have wronged someone?
If the transgression involves taking property, or insulting, or slandering, or anything related to one's honor, and the wronged person has been informed, then the property must be returned to him, and his forgiveness sought for matters concerning his honor. However, if the transgression related to one's honor was backbiting or slander that did not reach the wronged person, then seeking Allah's forgiveness for him and supplicating for good for him in the gatherings where the backbiting occurred is sufficient, without informing him, for fear of causing tension.
