Al-Baghawi, Ibn al-Jawzi, and Al-Suyuti mentioned several accounts regarding the reason for the revelation of the verse: "O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people":

1. It was revealed concerning Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas when he reproached a man about his mother.

2. It was revealed concerning the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when they mocked Umm Salamah for being short.

3. It was revealed concerning Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab when it was said to her: "O Jewess, daughter of two Jews."
