Is a girl obliged to obey her mother by not marrying a man she desires because he would be his second wife, and the mother rejects him?

1. A woman's guardian (wali) is her father, then her son, then her paternal grandfather, then her brother. The mother has no guardianship over marriage.

2. The mother must be convinced to accept the suitor if he is religious and of good character. If she refuses, then obedience and filial piety towards her are obligatory.

3. The suitor is ahabni (a non-mahram) to his fiancée, so private seclusion (khalwa), meeting alone, or shaking hands between them is impermissible.

4. If the love for the suitor stems from violations of Islamic law, then repentance to Allah is obligatory, and ties with him must be cut until the marriage is concluded.

5. The recommendation is to fear Allah (have taqwa of Allah) and ask Him for success in finding a righteous husband.
