The correct wording of the Hadith is: "A believer is not stung from the same hole twice." Scholars have differed on whether the word "yuldagh" (is stung) is a statement or a prohibition.

Al-Khattabi said: "Its wording is a statement, but its meaning is a command," meaning: Let the believer be firm and cautious, not being overtaken by heedlessness again and again. Some narrate it as "la yaldagh" (should not be stung) with a kasra on the ghayn, making it a prohibition.

This prohibition is understood to imply detestability, meaning that a firm believer should not be deceived by something that harmed him once, again and again. Abu Ubayd said: It is proper for a believer, if afflicted from one direction, not to return to the like of it. Ibn Battal said: In it is an admonition for the Ummah to beware of that whose outcome is feared to be evil.
