What is the wisdom behind holding a wedding feast (walimah) in marriage, and when should it be held after the marriage contract (aqd al-nikah)?
The (wedding feast) is one of the sunnahs (traditions) of marriage, intended for its public announcement and declaration among people, not to compel the husband to consummate the marriage on the wedding night; for the announcement is for the legal contract, not for cohabitation. It also reflects joy and happiness on this occasion. The eminent scholar Waliullah Dehlawi mentioned its purposes:
1. To publicize the marriage and distinguish it from illicit relationships, and to affirm the husband's exclusive right to his wife. 2. To thank Allah for the blessing of establishing an orderly household. 3. To show kindness and respect to the wife and her family, indicating her honor and status. 4. To renew blessings and express joy and happiness, along with the generosity and benevolence that follow.
