After Quraysh violated the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, they sent Abu Sufyan to renew the truce and extend its duration. He entered Medina and went to his daughter Ramlah, the wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. When he tried to sit on the Prophet’s bed, she prevented him because he was a polytheist. Then he tried to speak with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and with Abu Bakr, Umar, and Ali to seek intercession, but they refused or found no solution for him. Ali then advised him to grant protection among the people. So Abu Sufyan did that in the mosque. When he returned to Quraysh and informed them of what had happened, they condemned his action because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had not accepted him.
