The answer

There is no harm in a woman observing her ' (waiting period) after her husband's death sitting with a Christian maid in the house, provided she does not display her adornments to her. This is based on the Almighty's saying: (And not display their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, or their [Muslim] women) [An-Nur:31]. Ibn Kathir and Mujahid interpreted "their women" to mean Muslim women exclusively, and this ruling is general for all women.
