Some scholars have divided innovation (bid‘ah) into good (hasanah) and bad (sayyi’ah), while others believe this division is incorrect, as it contradicts the general saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Every innovation is a misguidance."

The reprehensible, blameworthy legal innovation (bid‘ah shar‘iyyah) for which its perpetrator deserves censure is an invented method in religion that emulates the Sharia, intended to exaggerate devotion to Allah.

Al-Shatibi holds that innovations vary in their degree; some are outright disbelief (kufr), some are sins, and some are disliked (makruh).
