Is it permissible to sell a kidney to pay off debts?

It is not permissible for a person to sell any of their organs, even if they are superfluous. This is due to the prohibition of selling a free person or any part of them, as narrated by Al-Bukhari from Abu Hurairah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah said: 'There are three whose adversary I shall be on the Day of Resurrection: a man who gave a pledge by Me and then broke it; a man who sold a free person and consumed the price; and a man who hired a laborer and, after receiving full service from him, did not pay him his wages.'" Furthermore, resolution No. 26 of the Islamic Fiqh Council explicitly states the impermissibility of subjecting human organs to sale under any circumstances. Among the conditions for a valid sale is that the person must own the item being sold or be authorized to sell it. A person does not own their organs and has not been granted legal permission to sell them.
