Is hugging permissible between female friends, or is it restricted to one's husband?

It is permissible for a man to embrace another man, and for a woman to embrace another woman, especially upon returning from a journey or after a long absence, or when overcome by longing; this is based on the actions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Companions. Scholars have, however, made an exception for embraces that arise from lustful desire. Some scholars disliked embracing and clinging at every meeting, based on what was narrated from Anas that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If a man meets his brother, should he bow to him?" He said: "No." He said: "Should he embrace him and kiss him?" He said: "No." He said: "Should he take his hand and shake it?" He said: "Yes." The prescribed action upon meeting is to greet and shake hands.
