Is a son obligated to go into debt to fulfill his mother's unnecessary and luxurious requests, especially if that negatively impacts his household expenses and his family's basic needs?
It is not obligatory for children to give their mother money if she is not in need of it, and even more so if they would have to borrow it. Nevertheless, Allah has commanded filial piety towards parents and has linked their right to His right. Therefore, children must strive to please their mother, and if that requires giving her money, then they should do so, provided it does not affect their essential expenses, and they should not borrow for that purpose. Rather, they should gently apologize if they do not possess what she requests. One must be wary of wives who wish to cause separation between children and their mothers. The advice is to be moderate in fulfilling the parents' wishes, neither burdening oneself nor neglecting them. One must also be careful not to neglect one's own children or fall short in the rights of the wife and children, for they also have rights. Obedience to parents is obligatory except in disobedience to Allah, and there is no obedience to the daughter-in-law in disobedience.
