Is the matchmaker obligated to return everything the suitor paid, including the dowry, gifts, and engagement expenses, after the engagement is broken, or is it sufficient to return only the dowry, gifts, and a sum from the suitor's father?

A woman is not permitted to seek a divorce except for a valid reason such as hardship, difficulty, or ill-treatment. If a woman dislikes and detests her husband and fears that she will not be able to observe the limits set by Allah, then it is permissible for her to seek khulʿ by returning what her husband gave her. Khulʿ is not counted as part of the number of divorces. It can also be a divorce for compensation (ṭalāq bi-‘iwaḍ) and is then counted as part of the number of divorces. Both are a minor irrevocable divorce (baynūnah ṣughrā). It is permissible for the spouses to agree on compensation that is less or more than what she received, although it is disliked for the husband to take more than he gave her. If the matter has not reached the point of intense hatred and dislike, then it is better not to rush in seeking a divorce.
