What is the ruling on naming a child 'Izz al-Din, and is it permissible or disliked?

It is disliked to be named with any name appended with the word "al-Din" (the religion) or "al-Islam" (Islam), such as "Nur al-Din" (Light of the Religion) or "Sayf al-Islam" (Sword of Islam). Al-Nawawi and Ibn Taymiyyah both disliked being titled with these names. This dislike is not in the sense of prohibition, but rather in the sense of preference. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, changed several names, and this was not in the sense of prohibition, but rather in the sense of preference. The proof for this is that he did not compel Hazan to change his name when he refused, and if it had been obligatory, he would not have approved of his refusal. Therefore, naming with "Izz al-Din" (Glory of the Religion) is not forbidden, but other beautiful names are more preferable.
