What is the ruling on naming a newborn "Islam"?

The general rule regarding names is permissibility. However, it is forbidden to name children with names such as "Aflah" (Most Successful), "Rabah" (Gain/Profit), "Yasar" (Ease/Wealth), "Nafi'" (Beneficial), "Najih" (Successful) due to the inauspiciousness that might arise if the named person is not present when inquired about, or because the characteristics of the named person might contradict their name, which could lead to their disparagement, or to lying about them and about Allah. Scholars have differed concerning the names "Iman" (Faith) and "Islam" (Submission); some consider them disliked due to self-praise (tazkiyah). It is better to avoid naming children with them from the outset to avoid disagreement, but there is no sin upon whoever has been named with them, and they are not commanded to change their names.
