What are the Islamic regulations and limits for choosing names for newborns, and what are their proofs?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Lawful names are those that are free from servitude to other than Allah, and from commendation and glorification, or dispraise and degradation, or effeminacy and abasement. It is the right of the child upon their parents to improve their name and educate them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed for a parent who helped their child to be dutiful to them, saying: "May Allah have mercy on a parent who helps their child to be dutiful to them."
