What is the ruling on financial profit from placing paid advertisements on a website with a high visit rate?

If the website owner wants to display advertisements in exchange for financial compensation, there is no harm in that, provided the advertisements are permissible according to Sharia. As for prohibited advertisements, such as those promoting pornography, usury, or alcohol, it is not permissible to display them, and any earnings from them are unlawful.
