False claims of Mahdiship are misguidance, but they do not constitute disbelief that expels one from the fold of Islam. However, a liar's claim to be Jesus the Messiah falls under falsely claiming prophethood, which is disbelief, based on the Almighty's saying: "And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or says, 'It has been inspired to me,' while nothing has been inspired to him?" Scholars should advise this person, and if he does not desist, his case should be referred to the competent authorities or publicized so that people may be warned against him.
