Is it permissible for a latecomer, upon standing to make up what he missed of his prayer, for another person to join him in congregational prayer?

Scholars have differed on the issue of following someone who is belated (al-masbuq) in prayer. The majority of them hold the view that such a following is invalid, and that whoever follows him must repeat the prayer, arguing that the belated person is in the position of a follower (ma'mum) whom it is not permissible to follow.

However, the Shafi'is and some Hanbalis hold the view that it is permissible to follow someone who is belated, because in making up his prayer, he is in the position of one praying alone (munfarid). This opinion is the one considered for issuing fatwas.
